Radisson Collection Royal Hotel, Copenhagen renovation is complete
Over the past two years, the world’s first design hotel, Radisson Collection’s Royal Copenhagen, has undergone a remarkable transformation. Now, the world-famous icon is completely refreshed, and we are delighted to offer our guests a truly unique and exceptional design experience.
First opening in 1960, The Royal is the only hotel designed down to every detail by Arne Jacobsen – from the facade, to the famed Egg chair and even the cutlery in its restaurant. An international architectural landmark, The Royal truly embodies the essence of Radisson Collection – combining exceptional Danish design with authentic local touches, a vibrant social scene and a dynamic location opposite the Tivoli Gardens.
“Arne Jacobsen’s combination of aesthetic and functionality is one of the many reasons his designs have become timeless and are still so highly celebrated today. Our aim has been to revive the iconic atmosphere by carefully protecting our legacy whilst at the same time modernizing to meet the guests’ expectations. Guests crave local and unique experiences and there is no other hotel as unique as this one”, says Tom Flanagan Karttunen, Area Senior Vice President Nordics of the Radisson Hotel Group.
Acclaimed Danish design studio Space Copenhagen has orchestrated a refresh that includes all guest rooms and suites, the newly opened restaurant & bar, the lobby, meeting rooms and event space. Five of the renovated guest rooms are unique Signature Suites designed by Fritz Hansen.
“We are deeply honored to be a part of this renovation. The hotel is a true landmark for design aficionados around the world. It is a destination. Our intention is to preserve its extraordinary character but we don’t want to turn it into a museum, we want to bring it to life for a new generation,” says Peter Bundgaard Rützou and Signe Bindslev Henriksen, Co-founders of Space Copenhagen.
Blending the iconic with new inventive design
Space Copenhagen dug deep into the hotel’s archives to fully understand the spirit of Jacobsen’s original scheme. Several of Arne Jacobsen’s most famous furniture pieces were designed especially for the Royal Hotel, like the iconic Egg and Swan chairs. Working closely with Fritz Hansen, several of these existing pieces are now revitalized with new upholstery.
The new interior layout reintroduces original features and furniture alongside new intriguing pieces designed by Space Copenhagen. All designed to complement the hotel’s existing distinctive architecture, continuing the hotel’s influence as a destination for the modern traveler to engage with the best of contemporary design.
A lively welcome
Arne Jacobsen’s original intention for the lobby was for it to be a lively public area. Thoughtful changes to the layout reflect his vision, creating a buzzing public area suited for today’s guests who now can work, socialize and relax in the welcoming lobby.
The atmospheric lobby invites guests to enjoy iconic furniture such as the ‘Egg’ chair, a curved variation of the Stay Sofa by Gubi and several rare Arne Jacobsen ’Pot’ chairs, originally used in the hotel’s restaurant in 1960.
One of the most spectacular and recognizable features of the original design is the suspended staircase, which pushed boundaries of what was possible in construction and engineering. Using photographs from the hotel’s archives, original elements such as leather wrapping on the handrails have been re-introduced.
New restaurant for locals and travelers alike
With a new entrance, announcing a complete interior refit, the restaurant & bar adds an outstanding design destination to Copenhagen’s world-class roster. Open plan with floor-to-ceiling windows, the restaurant has truly become an extension of the energy of the street – reflecting the shifting moods of each day.
To bring this informal atmosphere indoors, the space features an open kitchen and is finished with lounge-style seating – replete with Ren chairs from Stellar Works and a selection of Arne Jacobsen’s lesser-known masterpieces like the Drop chair and the Mayor sofa.
With super-chef Christian Paradisi at the helm, the restaurant specializes in Danish smørrebrød alongside classic Grill and Bistro dishes – notably, a 25-day dry aged rib-eye steak. The showpieces, however, are an afternoon tea inspired by Jacobsen’s inimitable aesthetic and a magnetic bar that brings guests hand-crafted specialty drinks named after famous global designers.
The place for important decisions
The top modern meeting and events space has been completely refreshed, with 10 conference rooms, including five executive boardroom suites.
The meeting rooms, named after Arne Jacobsen’s design classics, are all designed with a formal, yet warm touch. To match the slightly elevated boardroom tables, bespoke raised ‘Swan’ chairs furnish the meeting rooms enhancing guest comfort. The legacy of Arne Jacobsen lives on through the reframed art on the walls, found in the hotel’s archives.
“Our aim is to create a space and an experience that people remember: It is a place for people to celebrate memories of the past, and create memories for the future”, says Peter Bundgaard Rützou and Signe Bindslev Henriksen, co-founders of Space Copenhagen.
Inviting rooms with stunning city views
As Copenhagen’s first skyscraper, the guest rooms boast stunning views over the Danish capital. To complement this unique feature, a deep windowsill of light marble is reintroduced, drawing the guests’ gaze to the panoramic view. The new mirrors are thoughtfully placed to reflect the vibrant cityscape, making it visible even when facing the wall.
In homage to the homely atmosphere Jacobsen anticipated for the hotel, the guest rooms feature wooden paneled walls that add a warmth and softness. One room has remained untouched since 1960: room 606 on the sixth floor. This room stands as a testament to Arne Jacobsen’s love of nature, light and design, in all its form and functionality.
“With this renovation, we have tried to preserve and reaffirm Arne Jacobsen’s love of nature, light and design. Every room is a little bit of history repeating and is full of delightful details, designed to give each guest an exceptional experience”, says the General Manager Brian Gleeson and adds:
“Room 606 is a time capsule open for guests who would like to immerse themselves in Danish modernism. By interpreting our iconic heritage, we aim to recreate this legendary building and escalate it to new heights for the future”.
